Blue – rumped Parrot, Psittinus cyanurus   S : 19                            ¹¡Ë¡ãË­è



Short – tailed, stocky appearance. From hanging parrots by large size and by blackish under wing with red wing lining. 

Male  : blackish back, red shoulder patch, blue – grey head, neck, lower back and rump. Red bill. 

Female  : brownish head and dull brown bill. Only slight blue tinge on back.

Voice  :  a loud, discordant jangling, reminiscent of Black – collared Starling (830). 

Habitat  :  evergreen forests of the level lowlands; occasionally cultivated areas where these are close to forest. Rare resident; much reduced.

Red - breasted Parakeet, Psittacula alexandri   S : 36                      ¹¡á¢¡àµéÒ



Identified by black bar across forehead, broad black moustache and by orange – pink breast. 

Male  :  red bill and violet – tinged breast.

Female  :  black bill and more pinkish orange tinged breast.

Juvenile  :  youngest stages have mainly green plumage, with dull greyish limited to sides of head,  and faint facial markings. Older birds assume the adult face pattern but lack and pink on the breast. Bill mainly blackish. 

Voice  :  harsh, usually disyllabic or chattering screams. 

Habitat  :  deciduous woodlands, secondary growth and cultivated areas with relict tall trees, primarily in the plains but occasionally up to 1200 m. Uncommon to locally common resident.

Alexandrine Parakeet, Psittacula eupatria   S : 51                            ¹¡á¡éÇâÁè§

Identified by large size, huge red bill and mainly green plumage with a maroon – red shoulder patch.  Feet yellowish. 

Male  :  blackish necklet extends into a pinkish collar around the back of the neck. 

Female  :  greenish throat; lacks neck collar.

Juvenile  :  like female, but both body plumage and bill duller. 

Voice  :  a loud, ringing trrrieuw, highest in the middle (JS).

Habitat  :  lowland mixed deciduous forests, secondary growth. Rare resident, now very much reduced.

Black – throated Laughingthrush, Garrulax chinensis  S : 30


Distinctive face pattern of slaty – grey crown, black mask and throat and striking white cheeks. Body plumage dark greyish olive. When in mixed flocks with White – crested and Lesser Necklaced, it is the least numerous of the three. 

Voice  :  an outstanding songster. Has a repetitive, thrush – like song of fluty whistles interspersed with high – pitched squeaky notes. 

Habitat  :  mixed deciduous and evergreen forests, secondary growth and scrub from plains to 1400 m. Fairly common resident.

Crested Wood – Partridge, Rollulus rouloul   S : 26                               ä¡è¨Ø¡

      

Predominantly dark greenish plumage, with red legs, red orbital skin. 

Male  :  distinctive maroon crest and white patch on crown. Glossy plumage appears almost black; wings dark brown. 

Female  :  paler green plumage with reddish brown wings; lacks crest. 

Voice  :  “a  melancholy, glissading whistle, su-il, repeated in a steady series and uttered most frequently at daybreak” (M&W).

Habitat  :  evergreen forest of lowlands and lower hills.  Rare resident, much reduced
